My first impression of this lens was that it was much smaller than the pictures make it out to be. Only about 3 inches long by 2 inches in diameter. But boy does it make your photos pop. I've been reading a lot of reviews about the new Pentax K7, considering upgrading from my K10D. But one review I read, criticized consumers for wasting time always upgrading their camera body, when what really matters is the glass. Well, I can say, that guy was right. I took the money I was going to use on a new body and spent it on 2 high quality lenses. One of them was this macro. I'm not disappointed. It's like my camera is brand new and my photographic abilities have been improved. I bought this lens for flowers and insects. It works amazingly. At times the focus does "hunt" a bit, but I think that's my camera more than the lens. I was expecting tight, crisp, high detail close ups and that's exactly what I've been getting. I've heard others say this makes a great portrait lens. Well, they're right. I didn't know why until I gave it a shot. Because this lens is macro and has such shallow focus capabilities, it tends to throw the background into a very soft buttery bokeh. This makes your subject really jump out of the photo. The effect is subtle but very pleasing and your portraits will be much improved I promise. So this is a double duty lens and it works great for both. Add to that, it's small and light and it's easy to toss in the camera bag for when you need it. Someone else mentioned the focus action is a bit "crunchy" but I think they may have the focus clamp on. If you accidentally bump that to "on" position, it tried to hold the focus. You can still turn the focus ring though but it requires more effort and makes a slight grinding noise. Don't do this and you'll be just fine.

A difficult lens to review - ssgman - San Francisco, CA USA
This lens is hard to review since it does have some significant weaknessnes so let me get those issues out of the way:

1) Not a good low light performer. Don't think you are going to set this up in a low lit room and a tripod and get the AF to cooperate unless you provide additional light. You will have to manual focus.

2) No AF limiter, which wouldn't be a problem if 1) wasn't a problem.

Ok, bad news out of the way, lets go over the good news:

1) This lens is TACK SHARP. You won't find a sharper lens. This thing could resolve out to 200mp is my guess, but we won't know about that given the current state of sensors.

2) With well lit situations this lens is an AWESOME macro AND portrait lens.

So the dilemna is how much to punish it for the low light performance. In my view, not much and here's why: For what this lens does well you are not going to find a lens that does better. This lens max's out the categories it does well in (sharpness, color, contrast) when properly lit so I'm going to give it 5 stars. To do otherwise would be like taking points off the Canon 300mm 2.8 because it didn't take decent picures in the house at the last birthday party. One lens cannot be all things to all people.

Best Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 Wide Angle Lens for Canon SLR Cameras Review

I love, love, love this lens. It makes a great companion to my Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM Standard & Medium Telephoto Lens for Canon SLR Cameras and has come in handy in many situations.

If you're looking for a wider Angle of View, then this lens will provide it. Whether taking landscape shots or tight interior shots, it will perform and deliver outstanding photographs.

That said, you have to be careful when purchasing filters for this lens. I purchased a Tiffen 58mm Haze-1 Filter to protect this lens and when I put it on the lens, there was a small dot about 3-5mm in diameter in the center where the filter and lens were touching each other. I ended up having to buy a more expensive, thinner glass, filter to get an acceptable fit.

Beyond that, the only other negatives for this lens are that it's more loud than my USM lens, but that's to be expected. It's also not so loud that it's distracting; it's just noticeable if you're used to USM. And the focus ring on the lens stops at either end. I prefer the way my 50mm lens handles that in you can just keep turning it and not feel like you're damaging anything internally. With this lens, I fear turning the focus ring too far.

All in all, the negatives with this lens pale in comparison to the benefits. I don't think twice about swapping the 50mm for the 24mm when the situation calls for it.

great inexpensive wide angle - D. McKinstry -
great inexpensive wide angle lens for those who can't yet afford an "L" lens. quick, quiet, great on a crop body.

Not sharp enough for me - W. King - US
I have the Canon 35/2.0 prime lens, which I like very much but on my Canon XTi, it's not quite wide enough. So, I purchased this lens and also a Sigma 18-50/f2.8 EX Macro to take on vacation, thinking the Sigma would be used for more flexibility, and the 24mm for a very light walk-around lens.

In my tests, though, my 24/2.8 wasn't nearly as sharp as my 35/2.0. It might have just been my copy of the lens, I don't know. But, the Sigma was as sharp as the 24mm. So, I returned the 24mm, and will keep the Sigma. With a prime, you lose the zoom, so it better be both a) sharper and b) brighter (wider aperture). Since it was the same sharpness as the Sigma, and no brighter, back it goes. I was thinking I'd sell my 35/2, but now I'll keep it, as it's both very sharp and has an f/2.0 aperture.

Again, it could have have been the copy I got, but since my Sigma fits my needs, I won't try again.

I got this lens because my Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II did not have a wide enough angle for nature pictures, and the lens that came with my Canon XT was impressively terrible (my point-and-shoot took better pictures).

This lens takes awesome outdoor photos. 24mm turns out to be a good choice, the pictures are sharp (not as sharp as the 50mm, but still excellent), and there are no strange distortions like the lens kit lens.

I actually started using this lens indoors (portraits and such), so my 50mm gets used less and less these days, but frequently it is too dark in the room to use this lens, and you do have to get rather close to the subjects with this lens (and still crop on the computer).

Focusing is strange with all of the lenses I have, unfortunately. The 24mm lens seems to focus more accurately, but focuses more slowly. And the 50mm is lens focuses pretty fast, but frequently when shooting at f/1.8, I will realize it was focused where I didn't exactly want it after viewing photos on my computer. I believe all "inexpensive" lenses will do this.

First off let me say that South Bay Camera handled my order very well. I really chose a teleconverter based on price. With that in mind I am very satisfied with the product. I confirm what other reviewers mentioned that the AF "hunts" for a focus at higher magnifications so I had to use manual focus. Other than that, I had no other problems with it. FYI, I used the converter on my Canon 75-300mm f4-5.6 III and my kit lens (18-55mm). It worked on both.

Auto-Focus is unpredictable with this - MalibuJack -
I have had this teleconverter for several years. It does work, however as others have mentioned, autofocus is troublesome. Every auto-focus lens I have tried will endlessly hunt if your in medium to low light situation and you ultimately have to manually focus. Previous reviews have explained "why" it happens, however it also slows down an otherwise fast autofocus lens in bright daylight which limits its use. One thing I did notice is if you get everything just "right" the images still are not as sharp.

I would recommend using a different name-brand teleconverter.

Mounting Problems for EFS lens - Michael T. Blakley -
The Bower tele-converters work only on Canon's EF lenses. It will not work on the Canon EFS lenses. There's a difference in the way the EF and EFS lenses are made. The Canon camera body will accept both EF and EFS lenses, but Bower tele-converters only accept the EF lenses.

Also, I am trying to get the Bower converter to work with a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 on my EOS Rebel XSi. But I'm having very limited success.

The auto-focus will not work. The camera searches and searches, but to no avail. It must be manually focused. And that's a big pain because the ring you must hold in order to manually focus the lens is tiny and I end up touching the lens filter about half the time.

If I could get my money back on the bower tele-converter, I would.

Some people have complained about autofocus problems. After reading a little about this, people must understand that for most autofocus systems to work the aperature must be 6 or greater (that means a number smaller than six). But, a 2x converter adds two f-stops to the aperature (decreases the aperature) so you must have a lens that goes no lower than f/4 for the aperature. Most zoom lenses go to somewhere are 5.3 to even higher numbers and that means that as you zoom in on a subject the autofocus will quit working. The answer is that with a teleconverter expect to use manual focus when using a zoom lens.

I am please that the Bower 2X lens mounted to my EOS Rebel XT and performed well with my Canon EF 70-300mm zoom lens. But when my Canon EFS 18-55mm lens would not mount to the Bower 2X, I was very disappointed. The extra 1/8" of rubber-like material on the inner Canon EFS 18-55 lens will not allow it to fully seat in the Bower mount.

This is a superb lens -- and I mean truly superb. It is the IQ equivalent of the Nikon 24-70 2.8 lens, and I don't say that lightly. The IQ between shots taken with this lens and with the Nikon version are indistinguishable, even by pixel peepers, and at half the price.

It has won countless awards already in the half year it has been available for Nikon (it was available for Canon first), including a recent European product award for best lens of the year.

Highly recommended. It balances beautifully on a D700 body, and it is super silent, fast focusing, and just a joy to use. Beware! The Filter size in 82 -- get a good UV filter for lens protection -- this is a big lens.

Despite the diameter, it is half as large as the Nikon equivalent -- and though it weighs almost the same, the balance on the D700 or D300 is better so it feels like it is also half the weight.

Just an all-around great pro-quality lens.

BUT -- there is one caveat -- like other Sigma lenses (though they are getting better) there is sample variation. My first lens didn't focus properly and needed to be exchanged. The second one was pitch-perfect.

Problems with Pentax k7 and Shake reduction!!! - Kenneth M Wilson - Herndon, VA
I bought this lens to pare with a new Pentax K7 and I have been playing with it for two weeks now. I notice right away excessive blurriness in my photos. The blurriness got worse at slower shutter speeds. I soon discovered that it is a problem with the Shake reduction feature in the Pentax. I contacted Pentax and Sigma. Pentax claims it is a problem with the Lens. Sigma told me they are aware of the problem and they are looking into it. All that aside and with the Shake reduction feature turned off I am actually quite impressed with the lens. I am no expert at testing lenses, but I would agree with praise other photographers give this one. It is heavy and fat, but it does feel good in my hands and the zoom and focus controls are easy to use even with big gloves on. If Sigma can not fix the problem with the SD feature I will be very disappointed and will never buy a sigma lens again, but I will give them three weeks and see.

i really wanted to like this lens. I had just upgraded to the d700 and need a full frame normal zoom. I was hoping to find a lower priced alternative to the Nikon 24-70. I had read some outstanding reviews and had high expectations. Got the first one, major focus issues that couldn't even be corrected with AF fine tune. Sent it back. Second copy, seemed to focus alright except it front focused at 70mm. I sent it back frustrated and decided to give it one more try before I threw in the towel. Third one also had bad focus issues. It was strange, it seemed to focus fine in normal light but indoors or in lower light situations it would miss focus constantly.

I rented the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Wide Angle Zoom Lens between the first two copies for a wedding I was shooting and fell in love with it. It focused fast and accurately, felt better in my hand (the sigma was too big around and had a very stiff zoom ring) and just blew my mind with its sharpness, color rendition and contrast.

I decided to just pony up the extra cash and get the Nikon version and I've been using it for 6 months now and could not be more happy with my decision. Worth it times a thousand! After all it's my bread and butter lens and I don't mind paying more for something I KNOW will get the job done with 100% confidence. Even if I had gotten a Sigma that worked properly, I would always be wondering if it would fail or go screwy on me half way through a wedding.

I'll say to compare the two, the Sigma might be on par with the Nikon sharpness wise (if I manual focused), but the Nikon had (slightly) better bokeh, colors and that magical pop that makes it stand out from the rest.
I liked that the sigma was a bit shorter but like I said, it was too wide for me and the zoom and focus rings were too stiff. Also the lens hood that comes with the Nikon is vastly superior. Even though it adds another 4 inches of length, I like the extra protection it offers as it's banging around hanging off my hip. Also it is easy to put on and has a switch to remove it. The Sigma hood is very shallow, hard to line up and put on and doesn't inspire much confidence.

BOTTOM LINE
Nikon for best IQ and dependability.
Sigma for the budget conscious if you have the patience to deal with exchanges or repairs and don't mind taking extra time trying to get in focus shots.

I would NEVER recommend the Sigma to anyone doing paid work or who plans to do paid work.

For the person who is not really concerned about minute details in an image this lens for you.
I tried it out hoping I would be good enough or at least close to the canon 24-70L 2.8.
If you don't do close up photography it would probably be fine. but since I do so much macro this lens leaves out just enough detail the canon picks up that I returned it.

I tested this lens vs the Canon for a week and nearly kept it.. that is how close to the canon it is in quality. I performs just as good for all I am concerned. yea the focus is a little loud but that doesn't bother me. But Where I notice the softness of this lens the most is in the detail and in portraits. The canon is a good bit sharper in both areas. enough that I wouldn't keep this lens. If I wasn't such an avid macro photographer and didn't mind a little softness.. yea.. Sure I'da kept this lens. So for all i am concerned this is a GREAT LENS! for the non-pro photographer that is isn't worried about the minute details of an image.

I purchased the Opteka .45X wide angle and it is a low cost lens. The problem is it doesn't double the field of view as promised. A real 45X would more than double the field of view but this lens is more like a .75X so it only increases the field by around 30% not 100%. Most often you could step back enough with your camera to get the same increase in width. If you only want a slight increase in picture width then this lens would work but the company selling this lens should be more honest and say that.

Last week we went for a walk on one of the local trails in Lake Tahoe. I left the camera at home and brought my compact digital camera. Half the mountain, we encountered a bear. I have the camera out and took some pictures before they ran into the woods.

When I got home, I enlarged and cropped the image, but the image has proved pixels. 2 years for my old digital camera is not enough to avoid points. The higher the resolution cameras,The more flexible you have a later review of your image. So now I'm looking for a new compact digital camera with at least 7 megapixels. Here are my Top 5 picks.

1) EP-Z750 Casio Exilim Digital Camera Review

EP 7.2MP-Z750 is the smallest, lightest and thinnest camera in the group. It does not seem big enough to have 7.2 mega pixels, but it does! The back of the camera is almost all the LCD display, 2.5 "value, is extrasize, ideal for composing and viewing your pictures. This is a 3x optical zoom lens with anti-shake and 30 scene modes than the usual 8 or 12 on most digital cameras, and up to yours. First the lens itself is an excellent wide angle prime. Very sharp edge to edge even wide open. Virtually no flare. But it should not be bought for that purpose. The 14mm f2.8 is cheaper (at ,000!) and faster. The 16 to 35mm f2.8 zoom is even cheaper and much more versatile. Also, this lens does not auto focus and has a big unprotected bulb in front that requires special care in handling.

What the lens does is produce wide angle shots that cannot be obtained from any other lens. In a normal wide angle, tilting the camera so it is not parallel to the ground makes the vertical lines tilt strongly open or closed. The more you tilt the camera, the stronger the effect. Sometimes you want that effect. It can enhance the height of things. But other times you don't. This lens offers the ability to control line tilt or eliminate it altogether. Set the camera so lines are all straight or tilted to the extent you want then shift the lens itself up, down or sideways to capture the desired field of view. The effect is amazing.

But that is not all. Because lines can be kept straight, shooting two or more shots by shifting the lens instead of the camera facilitates stitching multiple shots into very wide angle images. It is possible to get a shot wider than a fish eye lens with no linear distortion.

And that is still not all. The ability to tilt the lens helps depth of field. I won't try to explain the principle (there are plenty of sites on the internet that describe it) but with the camera on a tripod, it is possible to set the basic shot, shift the lens to the desired point, tilt the lens until everything is in focus up to within a very short distance from the lens, take that shot, then shift the lens the other direction with no or the opposite tilt and take a second shot, then stitch the two shots to get an image wider than a fish eye in focus from inches to infinity even with the lens wide open.

This lens is mostly useful for architectural and landscape photography. You will not use it to photograph the kids or carry around town on vacation (unless you take photographic vacations). It takes a lot of work. Basically, the shot has to be set up in manual exposure and focus before the lens is shifted. A tripod is not absolutely necessary but will be useful for most shots, especially if you plan to stitch multiple shots. It takes those of us old enough to remember back to the days when everything had to be set manually. For those not that old, it will be a shock to have to make so many settings. But for certain shots, there is no substitute for this lens.

It is probably a professional only lens. The cost, effort and basic photographic knowledge required means this lens will never hit the mass market. But for those who like to take landscape panoramas, it is almost a necessity.

UPDATE

I recently had a chance to photograph a slot canyon. It was narrow and tall and I thought a perfect place to try out this lens. I did get some good shots but I was much more impressed with the 16 to 35mm f2.8 II. It was a sharp as the 17mm, easier to use and a lot more versatile. Part of the problem with the 17mm was the work required to set up a shot. It took forever and the results were uneven. This was not a place where tilting lines were a problem so I had the highest hope for shooting multiple shots shifting from side to side to create very wide angles. I found that the 17mm would produce a shot that appeared to be wider angle because I could get closer but the 16mm would get the same shot just not as elongated. The 16mm shot was the more impressive for that particular place. At another site I was shooting an arch and found I could easily get the whole span in the 16mm. A two shot stitch with the 17mm was no more impressive and had a problem with darkening at each end.

Bottom line, the 17mm is no substitute for other lenses. It is a highly specialized lens useful when you have to stitch multiple shots or keep vertical lines straight. The 16mm to 35mm zoom and the 15mm fisheye will be better choices for 95% of all the landscape panoramas and canyon shots.

Amazing, opens new possibilities in Photography - Steve King - Los Angeles
If the price has not completely deterred you, and you love wide angle images, this is your lens. I cannot rate it high enough. I shoot it on a 5d mark 2, and it is best used on a full frame camera. It is sharp! Not as sharp as the Nikon 14-24 with the 16:9 adapter, but it blows away the canon 20mm, the older version of the 24 mm ts-e, and the 24 - 70 L . It is a beauty to behold. And the images are truly remarkable. I can't imagine you will be disappointed.

Although the nikon 14 -24 sharper and a SUPERIOR lens in terms of image quality, the 17 mm ts-e can do things that will simply make you happy. Using the shift function, you can take a series of three images, that are overlapping by 30% or so, and then merge them in photoshop to give you 2 things. 1) you will have an effective sensor size of something like 48mm x 36 mm( depending on the direction of the shift) and 2) with that size sensor you will still have a 17mm lens! The files are big. On my 5d mark 2, they sometimes work out to be 500 - 600 MB. If you are going to print 8 x 10 or 13 x 19 it does not matter, but if you are going to go large, 30 x 40 and up, it makes a huge difference. You are effectively getting medium format sensor resolution with a 35 mm camera ( Once you merge the images together)These files have an angle of view on a 35 mm camera, that is equal to about a 10 mm lens, with no fisheye effect and little distortion unless you are close to things. This lens will give you images that will amaze you. The perspective( in these merged files) is real but unreal. It is unlike anything else.

The build quality is beautiful. It is hard to imagine having any disappointments in that area. The front lens element is a bit scary. Beautiful and scary at the same time. I think they call this the sublime. It is.

You have to watch for flare when your light source is in front of you, but I have actually found some of the flares to work well with the images I have taken. That would be an individual issue, I suppose.

If you think it should be 500 or a thousand less, you are wrong. It is a steal at 2500. It has changed the way I make images and see the world with the camera. It has opened new possibilities. If you are serious about the images you make and you love wide angle because it mimics the way your eye sees the world, then the money is well spent.

Please also note, that for archtectural and landscape photogrpahers, the perspective correction of the shift will also make you very happy. If you have expereince with a view camera and love the movements, this is close to that and in a very usable, functional form.

Personally I have not done much with the tilt function. I have played with the out of focus thing, but the lens is so wide and has such amazing depth of field that it does not easily give you the toy look of a longer tilt shift lens. But so what?

I cant figure out how to give this lens 6 stars, or even 7! Amazon wont let me click that many, but this lens is certainly worth it. BTW I have just shot an architectural interiors job, and using the shift function has given me a series of i images that would otherwise simply be impossible. Both my client and I love these shots!

You can wait a year or so, and the price will come down. But i would not wait! It is only money. This lens, to be culturally cliche for a moement, is , really, priceless. I will admit I was very nervous about spending that much for a lens! I am not rich! I would not buy it on credit, but I would buy it for sure! If I lost mine, I would figure out way to buy another....immediately.

If this lens appeals to you, and if you still have doubt, don't worry, you will love this lens every second you use it. Enjoy!

This review is based on using this lens for the last month or so on a Canon 1Ds Mark III camera.

General positive aspects of the lens:

- Build quality is superb
- Image sharpness unshifted and untilted is excellent in the corners even at f/4
- When shifted fully, image sharpness decreases in the corners at f/4 but is once again critically sharp when the lens is stopped down to f/8
- CA is absent across the frame unshifted
- When fully shifted, there is mild CA in the corners, but is still considerably better than most lenses

Negative aspects:

- Price of course. It would have been great it this lens was 0 or even 00 cheaper. However though the current price is very high, I wouldn't say the lens is poor value.
- Bulbous front element, so no front filters. This will be a deal breaker for a lot of landscape shooters or anyone who want to use filters. You also have to be careful with flare. I've had shots where the sun was almost behind me and yet produced flare in the image. There is no lens hood, so in those cases you'll need to use your hand as a shade to reduce flare.

In the end though, its unlikely that one is going to just impulse purchase this lens. Chances are you'll have specific uses for it and so you'll know what you are buying. You shouldn't hesitate because of optical quality though, its superb and I believe the lens has enough resolution to drive higher and higher MP cameras of tomorrow.

I purchased this lens to use with my Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8K 7.2MP camera. I attend a lot of baseball games and do a lot of hiking and nature photography. So far I have used this lens at both day and night games, in daylight nature settings, and in an indoor high school graduation ceremony. I can say without reservation that this lens was a waste of money. It looks good, it feels like it is made of quality materials, but the performance is terrible. Every picture I take with this lens has a slightly blurry, hazy, ghost-like quality to it. No amount of playing with the light and focus settings on the camera can fix the issue. It is just a bad (cheap) design. If you think a decent telephoto lens for is too good to be true, you are correct. Do not buy this lens!

I recently purchased a Sony Alpha 300, which is my first DSLR. I have been a Panasonic Lumix FZ series user for around 5 years now - my last 3 cameras were the FZ10, FZ18 and the FZ50. I enjoy taking photographs, but I am not a 'technically oriented' photographer - yet. So the Alpha 300 was a careful choice for me and has so far worked out great. So that's the basic background.

At this point the most important criteria for me were:

1. Range - I want to be as close to a single lens solution as possible. That was one reason I had stayed with the Lumix mega zoom series for so long. For me wide angle was important and the 17-70 range of the kit lens was the minimum acceptable.

2. Speed - I wanted a reasonably fast camera and lens. One BIG drawback of the Lumix series or any non SLR is speed. The kit lens was just OK in this respect. Much better than my Lumix, but not great in low light conditions.

3. Image quality - sharpness, good contrast and colors are what I look for. The kit lens that came with my Alpha actually seemed softer many times than my FZ18 or FZ50 pictures! That was a huge concern. Why get a DSLR if there isn't a marked improvement in IQ!

4. Weight - while I like a nice substantial feel to the camera and lens (the FZ 50 isn't light and neither is the 300K the lightest) I prefer it to be light enough that both me and my wife can operate. I liked the light weigth of the kit lens. The kit lens was also well balanced and the fact that it did not have a huge zoom that extended far out of the camera was a plus for me. So, unlike many others, the construction of the kit lens wasn't a problem.

What I was looking for then was a way to overcome the relatively poor IQ of the kit lens without losing its advantages such as light weight, fast focusing and versatile range. I also didn't want to spend a lot of money in the upgrade either.

After doing a ton of research it came down to the Sony 16-105 and the CZ 16-80. I decided to go with the 16-80 for slightly better sharpness, slightly lower weight and slightly better feel on the camera (It seemed to me that the focus on the CZ was a tad faster). In the end the CZ overcame the slightly lower price and slightly longer range of the 16-105 for my $.

So far I have been very pleased with the performance of this lens. Clearly, Sony has done an excellent job in optimizing this lens for performance. The difference v. the kit and the leica on the Lumix finally makes my upgrade worth it. It's a very easy lens to use and even on full auto controls the pictures look sharp and nice saturated colors.

If you're someone like me who is looking for a nice all in one DSLR solution with an emphasis on ease of use and great IQ then this is probably the best lens I can think of right now at any price for the Sony Alpha system. The Sony Alpha system itself with in camera stabilization and Live View is probably the best camera system for someone looking for ease of use....

This is a great lens and has good sharpness, contrast and zoom range. I bring this lens around where ever I go due to its versatility.

It is as sharp as a prime at 80mm. At 16mm, it is already very sharp in the center at f3.5 and when stop down to f5.6 it is sharp from corner to corner. Due to its great range, it can be use as a wide angle lens as well as a portrait lens.

The T* coating also gives this lens a good contrast. It is very noticeable when comparing to my older lens.

In one word, it worth every penny I paid for.

This is an incredible lens and it is probably on my camera 90% of the time. It is tack sharp at all apertures and focal lengths. The range is awesome. I love the wide-angle. I almost never use my ultra-wide anymore. I love the colors and contrast. I love the compact size. I find the build quality to be good and the focusing to be fast.

The only downside for me is that there tends to be some distortion at 16mm but that is easily fixed. Amazing lens. Buy it.

Not having the change to spring for the Canon "L" equivalent, I did my research and decided this would more than suffice. Having used it for some recent photos, I can say it was a good decision. Build quality seems quite good and the zoom mechanism has just the right feel. Sharpness at normal aperatures is very good and even at f2.8 is not too soft on my Canon 20D. Should make a good 'walkabout' lens and even a credible portrait lens at 60mm+ (although it is hard to beat the portraits taken with my 50mm f1.4). There is a little autofocus searching under dimmer light conditions, but not bad and certainly not a problem for normal landscape photos that I like to take. Comes with a short hood, unlike many Canon lenses. My first Tamron. Nice job Tamron!

I reviewed tons of sites before purchasing this lens. Here the lowdown after some extensive K20D (real world studio with people, not charts) testing:

-"Famous urban Internet legend" QA issues: Are done and over with. Blast from the (2008) past. All current lenses in stock do not have any issues anymore (in case you heard).

-Sharpness/Focus: Much, much better then lower grade zooms, especially if you stop down an f-stop or two (which you really should anyhow). It really shows all the (detailed) glory of your sensor. Do not settle for a third party lens (Sigma, Tamron, etc.) if you can have the real thing.

-AF: Way more accurate then kit/consumer lenses. Dead-on 95% of the time (versus non * lenses: More like 50%-70%). And in case you're comparing: Yes, it's better then the 17-70mm Pentax.

-A real bargain compared to Nikon/Canon glass: you would have to pay over a grand for the same quality.

-Bottom line: the best zoom glass you can get other then the (new digital) * primes. Even there, I think you would have a hard time to see a difference.

And yes, I do this for a living (shooting, not reviewing, that is).
I'm just flabbergasted how professional Pentax has become: The Nikon D300 with any glass shoots like a Coolpix in comparison (yes, I own an entire Nikon outfit).

Stunning lens - ssgman - San Francisco, CA USA
It's too bad there are bad copies out there because the only thing thing I can say about my copy is "stunning." Well, there are other adjectives but you get the idea;)

I've had mine for a little over a month now and it's by far my favorite lens. Crystal clear sharpness, incredible colors, great bokeh, and wonderful contrast. For me it's the perfect walkaround lens--although I wouldn't mind getting my hands on a 31mm Limited!

My copy does have very, very slight vignetting at 16mm at 2.8 but it's never been annoying, but it can be easily PP'd out if need be. I didn't mark it down for this because it is so slight and is actually pleasing to the eye, imo.

One thing, however, is you should buy it from a reputable dealer with a good return policy so if you do get a bad one it won't be a hassle to return it. I have to say, though, that this lens is so good it's worth taking the risk.

They are still having problems with quality assurance. This lens arrived and it looked great. I took several test images of a large 2 foot square black-on-white ink line drawing. It had sharply defined ink pen lines all over it, all the way to the edges. The images showed that the focus was unacceptably out of alignment from left to right and also a bit out from bottom to top. Looking at the test images over all, it seems like it might be a good lens if they can get me one with the alignment right.

Ammended 9/24 2009
The replacement arrived I tested it today using the same method and the alignment on this replacement lens was out of alignment in roughly the opposite direction by a similar amount, making the left edge significantly less sharp focused than the right. I returned it for replacement. We shall see what we get on the next try. I really would like to to get a properly aligned example of this lens that can provide images with a consistent focus left and right and top and bottom.

Amazon declined to send a third lens, offering simultaneously that getting two defective examples was very unusual, and strangely that, were they to ship a third, it would likely suffer the same defect. They volunteered to refund my shipping cost and purchase price, and recommended I contact Pentax. I will post clips from the center and each of the two extreme edges of the test image on this site.

It was very easy to alert Amazon and initiate a return. I really would still like to get a good one of these lenses. Apparently you do need some amount of luck to accomplish that.

My advice to anyone wanting one of these is, be prepared to test what you get, and do not order it a week before your big vacation trip expecting to have one arrive at the last minute that is good enough to use.

I've been using the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8, and upgraded to the Pentax because of the SDM, the wider wide angle, and the Weather Resistance, and I don't regret it. The Sigma isn't a bad lens, considering it costs ~60% as much, but this lens is far superior.

Initially, I thought it was broken - when I pressed the shutter button I didn't hear *anything*. Then I realized that it had focused, and was amazed. It's much faster focusing than my other short zooms, nearly silent, and very precise. Contrast is great, bokeh is very nice. It also focuses closer than I expected - down to around four or six inches. Not a Macro, but definitely useable for lots of close-ups.

The images I've gotten from it in the days I have had it are extremely sharp and contrasty. The Sigma I have tended to underexpose by about half a stop; this one seems dead on.

This thing is huge, too. It's probably 30% bigger than the Sigma, and much heavier. Prepare to spend money if you want to put filters on this baby. Make sure you have a good strong back before strapping this thing on your camera, too!

Pentax continues to amaze me with the quality they produce at such low prices. If you're one of the people that just snorted when I said "Low prices", I suggest you go check the price on the Nikkor or Canon equivalent of this lens (L series in Canon lenses). Then report back.

Stellar! If you're buying a new camera, don't buy the "throw away" lens that comes with the camera for a hundred bucks (you get what you pay for), save the money and apply it towards this lens. If you have the camera body already and are looking for a top notch lens, this is it. The 16mm-50mm f2.8 is great for shooting indoors and outdoors. It is excellent in low light situations, especially where you don't want to use a flash. One of the best lenses I've seen in a long time. Well worth the price at full price through Pentax, Amazon has been giving this lens away, so even better.

Best Tamron AF 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD IF Macro Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras Review

First the good things: for this low budget price you get probably the best 70-200 mm f/2.8 optics currently on the market. According to many reviews it beats Canon's 70-200 mm f/2.8 L IS USM in that respect. As I love macro photography, it's real 1:1 macro magnification plus only 0.95 m (about 3 feet) closest distance is another outstanding feature. I shot several thousand photos with it and if I got everything right it produced amazing results.

Now the not-so-good things: its autofocus is slow, loud and inaccurate - in particular in situations with shallow depth-of-field (fully open aperture @ long tele end) you can forget about it. Finally it comes down to manual focusing like in the very old days of analogue photography. Moreover, this means that you nearly only can use it for very slowly moving subjects or stills photography - this is definitely no lens for action shootings!

Manual focusing also means that you practically cannot use this lens with a EOS 450/500D (Rebel body). With my 450D/XTi I too often ended up with frustratingly unsharp results. The small viewfinders of those mini DSLRs include no real focusing screen so the eye has no reliable information about where the focus plane really sits. Working with live view + magnification improves this situation substantially but you can only use it in typical stills photography situations with a tripod and plenty of time to prepare the shooting.

So this zoom (I call it "the diva") was one reason that made me upgrade from my EOS 450D (Rebel XTi) to an EOS 50D - and with this tool I can really use the Tamron now. I also discovered with test charts that the AF of my Tamron has a frontfocus. With the 50D I could fix that without sending it to Tamron's services.

Pros:
- excellent optics for a zoom
- even at wide open aperture already quite sharp
- real macro (if you prefer that)
- very short closest distance of only 0.95 m perfect for great macros
- manual handling okay (focus ring gear a bit steep)
- quite light for such a fast tele zoom
- distortion and vignetting overall well controlled
- excellent price-performance ratio

Cons:
- sharpness breaks down at its tele end (but this is typical for many zooms)
- in bright light with heavy contrasts chromatic aberration can be visible (but is no great issue)
- old fashioned micro motor AF drive is loud, slow and inaccurate (at least in typical macro situations you have to switch to manual focusing)
- users of other lenses with modern ultrasonic drives (like me) have always to be aware that they have to override the AF drive before they try to focus manually, otherwise they kill the AF drive
- for switching to manual focusing you pull the focus ring: nice idea but works quite roughly and chunky
- manual focusing is nothing for impatient users or fast actions as the focus ring has a quite steep gear so fine tuning isn't easy
- no image stabilization: I really started to miss this great tele feature since I use Canon's excellent 300 mm f/4 L IS USM
- my zoom collects a bit of dust behind its front lens (and using a filter slows down a fast lens)
- the AF drive of my zoom has a front focus on both Canon bodys I use.

So, finally, you get for this competetive budget price a zoom with outstandig optics and macro capability (therefore I vote 4 stars), but in every other respect an old fashioned lens only suitable for "stills-like" manual photography. I cannot recommend it for mini DSLRs of Canons XXXD/ Rebel series.

Worth it at twice the price - S.C. -
Just got this lens last week and took it this weekend to photograph a U12 hockey game in a rink that has flourescent and fairly poor lighting. I still have some work to do learning how to really use this lens but I took some great pictures with this lens.

The biggest knock on this lens is that it is slow to focus. I did not find this to be the case at all.

The other knock on this lens is that the AF system is noisy. Granted I was in a hockey arena so I didn't notice it at all, but even taking some practice pictures in my living room I didn't think the focus system was that loud at all.

Especially when you take the price into consideration, this is a great lens. You'd pay close to double or triple the price for Canon glass with the same specs.

I researched for almost a month before I finally bought this lens. Don't waste time like me, just buy it. You won't be disappointed.

Great Lens for Indoor Sporting Events - J. C. - Delafield, WI
The Tamron lens is great at stopping the action in low lighting, as typical in a gym. The detail and picture quality is crisp and bright. I frequently take pictures without the flash and find this lens works well in those situations.

The Tamrom is a bit heavy so setting it on a monopod or tripod helps stabilize the camera for focusing. Using a monopod is somewhat easier when you're sitting in school bleachers as it takes up less space than a tripod.

The 70-200mm length is just right for most gyms since you may be seated very close to the action or quite a distance. I found that if I'm right on top of the action, taking pictures from the floor gives you an interesting perspective. In this case, set your arms on your knees to make a "tripod" to keep the camera still.

An unexpected expense, was the cost of adding a quality filter (0+). The photo store, where I print my pictures and take classes, recommended that I protect my investment by using a filter.

If you're having trouble deciding what type of lens to get, ask other photographers at the game. I spoke with a local photographer who was taking pictures at our high school volleyball game then went to his website to check out his pictures and they were great! I reviewed the properties (by right clicking on the picture) and noticed he was using a lens with a F-stop of f2.8.

After reading up on the Canon and Tamron lenses, I decided to purchase the Tamron as it was highly rated but far less money than the Canon lens. I am very pleased with the pictures taken with this lens!

I really love my new Tamron AF 70-200 lens. The ease of going from manual to autofocus is great. I tried this lens out for the first time at a recent wedding and am pleased with the results. I have been a photographer for over 28 years and this lens, for the money, is worth it. The picture quality is ranked at the top in my experience. I would recommend this lens to anyone.
